Menopause Q & A

What is menopause?

Menopause occurs when a woman stops menstruating. You officially reach menopause when you go 12 consecutive months without a period.

You can go through menopause in your 40s or 50s, but the average age of menopause in the United States is 51.

You may experience many of the symptoms associated with menopause months or years before you stop menstruating. During this transitional period, known as perimenopause, the production of estrogen and progesterone fluctuates.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Menopause symptoms vary. Some women have no symptoms, while others experience severe symptoms that affect their quality of life. These symptoms occur because of changes in sex hormone production.

Common indicators you may be approaching menopause include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Low mood
  • Irritability
  • Rapid mood changes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Low libido

In addition to the physical symptoms, the hormonal changes occurring with menopause affect bone health. Loss of estrogen increases bone loss, placing you at risk of developing osteoporosis.

What happens during a menopause consultation?

Dr. Modad discusses your needs and concerns when you come in for a menopause consultation. The all-female office offers a safe and comfortable place for you to discuss your situation.

Dr. Modad specializes in menopause and helps many women get the answers they need. She knows there’s no one-size-fits-all and conducts a comprehensive exam to fully understand all your needs.

Depending on the situation, Dr. Modad may also request blood work to check your hormone levels.

What treatments can help my menopause symptoms?
